Synagogue software vs church management software
The ChMS market is ten times the size, which shows in price and polish. It also shows in what is missing.
What church software does well
Church management systems (ChMS) such as Breeze and Planning Center are built for weekly attendance, small groups, volunteer scheduling, child check-in and online giving. They are inexpensive, modern, and well supported. A congregation whose main needs are a contact database, event sign-ups and donations can run on one.
What they do not do
- Hebrew dates and yahrzeits. None of the mainstream ChMS products store Hebrew dates or compute yahrzeits natively. Workarounds involve custom fields and manual conversion, which breaks in leap years and at turnover.
- Dues. Church giving is voluntary and unbilled. Dues are invoiced, aged and collected. ChMS billing is thin or absent, and statements by family with multiple line items are not the model.
- Honors, seating and school tuition. Not present, or present as generic forms.
- Religious school. Child check-in is not enrollment with tuition.
When the trade is worth it
A small congregation with voluntary contributions rather than invoiced dues, no school, and a volunteer willing to keep yahrzeits in a spreadsheet can save money with a ChMS. Most congregations above about 75 households, or any with a school or billed dues, will spend the savings on workarounds within a year.
General nonprofit CRMs
Bloomerang, Little Green Light, Neon CRM and Salesforce Nonprofit Cloud are donor systems. They are excellent for a capital campaign and poor at dues, school and ritual workflows. Some larger congregations run one alongside a synagogue platform; Congregation Connect is a Salesforce-based attempt to do both in one system.
Frequently asked questions
Does Breeze or Planning Center support yahrzeits?
Not as a native feature as of our verification. See their profiles in the general nonprofit section for what we could and could not verify.
Is church software cheaper than synagogue software?
Usually, at list price. The comparison only holds if the congregation does not need billed dues, Hebrew-calendar workflows or a school module.
